Slave Castles

As we departed Elmina, the site of St. Gregory's castle (humungous slave fort), Danielle and I sure needed a breath of fresh air and optimism.

To say that the slave castles at Cape Coast and Elmina are "moving" is perhaps the understatement of a lifetime. My stomach was definitely churning to walk through a place that really feels like a grave site. The story about the castle governor's balcony overlooking the womens' dungeon was overwhelming.
I am so glad that I did not go by myself...you really do have to hold someone's hand in such a disturbing place.
